Working at the Carl Stuart factory in West Yorkshire has been a great starting point for my learning. What started off as work experience has turned into a part time job alongside and supporting my university studies. I have developed a basis of knowledge across a spectrum of areas; including hand stitching and finishing techniques as well as machine construction, drafting patterns and cutting and learning different methods of working. My role has varied during my time at Carl Stuart, from dealing with alterations and repairs, machine work, hand basting fittings and ripping down as well as drafting and cutting patterns and cloth under the watchful eye of the tailors.
I have gained experience in tailoring garments for both menswear and womenswear which have helped inform my studies. Areas such as dealing with trade customers and learning about how the production line works has given me substantial knowledge about the business structure which has also helped with modules undertaken at university.
Carl Stuart have been a great support and inspiration towards my competition entry to the Golden Shears. I have been able to learn and develop vital skills needed to create a fully resolved outfit using the foundations of traditional tailoring imprinted with my own style.
